OUR STORY

Gillandra was a lifelong dream for our family with a desire to live sustainably and to experience country living. We felt it was important for our children to be able to see where their food comes from and have a hand in growing it.

At our home, the journey towards organic living was driven by the health challenges faced by my husband and our four children, who battle with eczema, asthma, and food allergies. Escaping the confines of dense suburbia was our solution, allowing us to adopt a lifestyle that not only promotes well-being but also minimizes exposure to environmental triggers.

Central to our sustainable lifestyle are our cherished chickens. These feathered companions play a pivotal role in our ecosystem, effortlessly transforming our food scraps into valuable eggs and nutrient-rich manure, which we lovingly use to nurture our fruit trees and vegetable gardens. Over time, we've honed our care practices for our feathered friends, ensuring that their contributions are maximized to benefit our entire homestead.

Yet, like any journey, challenges arose. The most persistent of these challenges? Rats.

As we embraced the principles of organic living, we encountered difficulties in safeguarding our chicken coop and feeders from potential contamination by rat feces and urine. While our chickens remained unaffected, it was their feed and water sources that attracted unwelcome visitors. We experimented with various feeder designs, discovering that traditional options were prone to rat infestations and weather-related issues.

To tackle the rat problem head-on, we knew we needed a solution. Managing the chickens' feed accessibility became our primary focus, restricting access to daylight hours. However, the demands of a bustling household often led to oversights, resulting in recurring rat nuisances. This realization inspired the development of our automatic chicken feeder—a game-changer that eliminates the need for early morning feedings and ensures consistent protection throughout the day.

Similarly, our auto-refill chicken waterer was designed to deter rats from accessing water sources and potentially endangering themselves. With these innovative solutions in place, we can confidently navigate our journey towards sustainable living, empowering families like ours to embrace a healthier, more environmentally-conscious lifestyle.
